Shared Micromobility Study

Help Shape the Future of Transportation in Salem and Keizer

Cherriots is exploring the possibility of launching a shared micromobility program in Salem and Keizer - think bikes and scooters available for short-term rental. The goal? To provide more sustainableaffordable, and convenient ways to get around, especially for short trips or connecting to transit.

What is Shared Micromobility?

Micromobility includes lightweight transportation options like e-scooters and bicycles, that are either electric or pedal-powered. They're ideal for quick trips, easing congestion, and reducing emissions.

Shared micromobility is when these types of transportation options are available for public use, often through a smartphone app. Users can rent a bike or scooter, ride to their destination, and park it for the next rider - simple as that.

It’s a flexible, low-cost, and environmentally-friendly option that supports first-and-last mile connections to transit.

What is This Study About?

We’re currently evaluating how a shared micromobility system could work in our community, where it might operate, how it would be managed, and what policies would guide it.

Phases of this study:

  1. Existing Conditions Assessment (Completed)
  2. Visioning Workshops (Completed)
  3. Community Engagement (Happening now!)
  4. Develop Program Framework
  5. Program Guidelines
  6. Performance Measures and Implementation Plan

We’re asking big questions, like:

  • What kinds of vehicles (bikes, e-bikes, scooters) would be most helpful?
  • Where should stations or parking zones go?
  • How can we make sure the system is accessible for all community members?
  • What safety, infrastructure, and policy considerations need to be addressed?
  • How can the program support local transportation goals, including reducing congestion, lowering emissions, and improving first-and-last mile access to transit?

This study will help create a roadmap for what a shared micromobility program could look like, from how it’s funded and operated, to how success is measured over time.
